LOCATION, LOCATION, LOCATION!

Ever since it created the concept of the Indian casino, Foxwoods has remained on the cutting edge—it opened the first full-service, nonsmoking casino on the East Coast, hosted the first tournament on the World Poker Tour, and by the end of the 20th century, it had paid the state of Connecticut more than $1 billion in contractual fees on its slot machine revenue alone.

With so much competition, Foxwoods owes much of its success to a one-of-a-kind location, easily reached from the biggest cities in the most densely populated section of the country, including New York, Boston, Philadelphia and Washington, D.C. Convenient shuttle bus service is available to the casino from Amtrak stations in New Haven and New London, Conn., just 20 minutes away. Yet despite the urban convenience, the tribal nation is a natural oasis, with hundreds of acres devoted to preservation, and the resort is convenient to some of the most fascinating tourist attractions in New England. Nearby Mystic, Conn., is full of shops and restaurants and is home to high-profile sights, including the Mystic Aquarium and Mystic Seaport, home of the nation’s premier maritime museum. The seaport also includes a re-created 19th-century whaling village with working shops and artisans, plus a fleet of tall sailing ships visitors can explore. Forty-five minutes from Foxwoods is Newport, R. I., famous for its mansions, most of which are open to the public and date back to the age of America’s robber barons.
