Newseum offers a window on
the world of news
The current administration may sometimes be accused of ignoring the news
media, but no one in Washington
will be able to ignore the Newseum,
a spectacular interactive museum of news set to
open in the spring with a giant “window on the
world” overlooking Pennsylvania Avenue and
the National Mall. Offering an experience that
merges five centuries of news history with state-of-the-art technology, the Newseum features
seven levels of galleries and theaters designed
to show museumgoers how and why the news
is made. An interactive newsroom, broadcast
studio and real news helicopter provide a taste of
what it’s like to be an actual journalist. Historic
artifacts such as a genuine Checkpoint Charlie
tower and the largest section of the Berlin Wall
outside Germany will be on permanent display.

Join the Circus! If you’ve ever considered running away to join the circus—and, really, who
hasn’t?—you won’t want to miss Underground Circus,
this year’s Kennedy Center Open House Arts Festival focusing on the circus arts from stage and street.
Audiences at the Sept. 8 festival will be treated to an
afternoon of more than 30 free performances, activities
and events presented by some of the most acclaimed
circuses and street performers on the continent. Some
of the highlights include Montreal’s Les 7 Doigts de la
Main (the 7 Fingers of the Hand, bottom left), which
blends theater, dance, acrobatics, multimedia and
hip-hop to create an intimate and totally contemporary
experience, and Brooklyn’s Russian American Kids
Circus (top left), which combines traditional circus
artistry with European theater to form an entirely new
kind of entertainment. Running away with the circus
never sounded so good. kennedy-center.org.
