The Duke: The 2007 Duke
Ellington Jazz Festival, a
yearly homage to Ellington
with more than 100 performances at more than 20 venues, shines the spotlight on
jazz legend John Birks “
Dizzy” Gillespie (1917-1993) by
bringing in top jazz musicians
who once performed with the
“world statesman of jazz.”
The program honors Gillespie’s exploration of styles
and rhythms from around the
world, particularly his role in
incorporating Latin rhythms
into traditional jazz, his creation of bebop and his impact
as an artist who revolutionized 20th-century music.
