National Geographic Traveler Editor
Keith Bellows shares why D.C. is more
than monuments and museums
Keith Bellows is often asked how frequently he travels. He is, after all, editor-in-chief of
National Geographic Traveler magazine. The truth? He’s on the road for three months of the
year. “I do have to be in the office to get the magazine out,” Bellows says. “However, with
e-mail and wireless devices these days, it’s easier than ever to stay on top of your job while
traveling, and I like to get a sense of what’s out there for us to feature in the magazine.”
When he’s not in a helicopter over Slovenia or surveying Arizona’s Sonoran Desert, you
can find Bellows in the city he has called home for the last seven years: Washington, D.C.
“This isn’t some behemoth of a city that has no personality and shuts down at 5, acting
only as a holding pen for government,” he says. “There’s so much going on. You can argue
that the best restaurants in America are right here. Because of the richness of ethnicity,
this is a crossroads of the world when it comes to food. If you really want to meet people
from everywhere in the world, you come to Washington.” —DENNIS MCCAff ER TY
