THE THRILL
OF THE HUNT
See those same old sights
in a whole new light
Trudging from one landmark to another can get
stale after a while. After all, a city’s soul is seldom
captured in glossy guidebooks. If you crave exploration and vacation, however, then adventure
tours are the ideal way to scout an unfamiliar city.
Combining elements of The Amazing Race with
The Da Vinci Code, adventure tours allow tourists
to uncover a city’s hidden jewels and institutions,
using riddles, puzzles and anagrams to unlock the
mysteries of a destination.
Several companies offer adventure tours, including Watson Adventures, which has scavenger
hunts in New York, Philadelphia and Boston, and
Ravenchase Adventures, with outings in a number
of destinations including Washington, D.C., Richmond, Va., and Princeton, N.J. Some companies and
organizations have used the tours for team-building.
Participants race around museums, parks and zoos,
answering queries designed to foster teamwork and
encourage nimble thinking and collaboration.
The Secrets of Central Park Hunt ( Watson
Adventures) enlightens team members on the secrets of places below 72nd Street. A sample: Near the
edge of the lake, which King is honored by a humble
throne? Answer: Billie Jean King—there’s a plaque
on a bench, bearing her name.
