Grand Central Terminal
NEW YORK CI T Y
Grand Central Terminal’s beaux-arts
splendor has been completely restored as
a result of several waves of refurbishment,
culminating in the terminal’s rededication
in 1998. Like Union Station in Washington, D.C., the revitalized facility has
become a community hub. Fine and casual
dining, cocktail lounges, specialty shops
and a gourmet food market are some of
Grand Central’s permanent attractions,
and everything from a tennis expo to an
annual holiday fair can be found on its
ever-changing calendar of events.
South Station
BOSTON
Back in 1945 this station played host to
135,000 visitors a day—the highest volume
of any depot in the United States—but by
1970 pigeons were occupying the building
and it was about to be demolished. Luckily, local preservationists saved the station
and today the classical revival building
with its signature clock and stone eagle
has been fully restored with newly added
shopping and a food court where diners
can enjoy a scenic view of the tracks.

Hoboken Terminal
HOBOKEN, N.J.
Remarkable not only for its combined
train and ferry facilities but also for its
unusual copper-clad beaux-arts design,
the Hoboken Terminal’s main waiting
room with Tiffany stained-glass ceiling
has already been fully refurbished, and
further improvements are in progress. As
the terminal marks its 101st birthday in
February, ferry service is being restored
and plans are under way to convert part of
the historic building into restaurant and
retail space.
Wilmington Station
WILMING TON, DEL.
One of a cluster of buildings in the area
designed by noted architect Frank Furness, by the 1970s this Victorian beauty
had grown dilapidated enough to inspire
community volunteers to adorn it with
a coat of brightly colored paint. Later,
Wilmington went through a professional restoration and reconfiguration that
refreshed the station’s striking three-story-high clock tower and established a
new ground-level waiting area with a café
and shops.
