Graduation day at the U.S. Naval
Academy in Annapolis.
harbor, but if one detours off the primary
arteries and walks the quieter brick
streets and alleys it’s still possible to get
a sense of the city’s historic significance
and Colonial heritage.
Founded in 1649, Annapolis evolved
into a thriving cultural hub in Colonial
America (the Revolutionary War treaty
was ratified here). It is home to 1,500
historic buildings, more 18th-century
architecture concentrated in one place
than anywhere else in the country. The
restored homes of three signers of the
Declaration of Independence—Charles
Carroll, Samuel Chase and William
Paca—are here and open to the public.
Today, Annapolis’ Main Street and
other bustling thoroughfares, radiating
out in a circle from the State House, are
lined with antiques shops, boutiques
and art galleries. At Annapolis Pottery ( 40 State Circle), across from the
State House, potters craft stoneware
mugs, plates and serving pieces. The
Market House ( 25 Market Place) on
the city dock has been a site for food
and services since 1858, though it has
been through several incarnations.
After closing for two years, it was most
recently reinvented in 2006 and is now
home to eateries like Chesapeake Bay
Crab Cakes & More, where you can
grab a lump crab cake sandwich or dip
into cream of crab soup; the Fractured
Prune for hot, hand-dipped doughnuts;
and Vaccaro’s Italian Pastry Shop, an
outpost of the famed Baltimore bakery.
