breezy feel and famous pastel-colored
structures have long been associated
with islands farther south, which share
similar soul and heritage. Bermuda is
Britain’s oldest colony and is still very
European, with touches of other cultures making their way into the music
and cuisine.
This is also the site of one of golf’s
biggest events—you could watch it
on TV, but those Bermuda colors
wouldn’t pop as well. Top golfers will
come together in Bermuda for the 26th
PGA Grand Slam of Golf (Oct. 13–15)
in Tucker’s Town. Established in 1979,
this is an annual 36-hole showdown
with a $1.35 million purse and the winning
title of Champion of Champions. Past
winners at the Mid Ocean Club include
Tiger Woods, Phil Mickelson and defending champion Angel Cabrera—making it
a treat to stop by and rub shoulders with
golf greats past, present and future.
Accommodations run the
gamut in Bermuda, though
its “floatels,” or yachts, are
certainly a welcome change
from the norm. A stay aboard
Tam-Marina’s Lady Charlotte, for
instance, includes cozy bedrooms, water
toys of all types and your own privileged
view of the Atlantic waters surrounding
the island.
Antigua
White sand beaches
with literary appeal
There’s a sense of flirty bounce in this
island that begs to be discovered by
people other than cruise passengers.
The shopping is great, the deserted
beaches are tops and—who knew?—the
island nation has slowly made a name
for itself with the Antigua & Barbuda
Literary Festival (Nov. 7–9), which
will celebrate its third run at Jolly
Beach Resort. The event began
as a special project of Baltimore
Times publisher Joy Bramble and
her sister Pam Arthurton, and it
has seen more than 70 authors
participate in its first two years. This
year will also see a special Festival
Village with children’s activities and
vendors, as well as the tried-and-true
recipe of Caribbean, U.S., Canadian
and British authors signing books and
discussing the creative process (this
year’s roster includes Pulitzer Prize
winner Junot Díaz). Can you imagine a
better setting in which to enjoy a good
book than a warm, powdery white sand
beach in November?
Maybe you would like a quiet space at
Carlisle Bay, a place of repose filled with
such special unforgettables as daily fruit
delivery to your room, a private cinema
for movie nights and original photography and art pieces throughout.
