I’m on the phone with Russ Panopoulos, ostensibly to talk about
Frankie & Johnnie’s steakhouses (two in New York City and one
in Rye, N. Y.), but I’m more impressed by the story of a hard-
working family that takes great pride in its work. And the story of
brother-in-laws Van Panopoulos (Russ’ father) and Peter Chimos,
who joined together almost 25 years ago to buy the original
Frankie & Johnnie’s on West 45th Street. And how they expanded
in 2002 to a second location on West 37th Street, in a landmark
building once home to actor John Barrymore (a gorgeous two-level
townhouse with a cozy bar downstairs and an expansive study
upstairs, which retains its stained-glass ceiling from 1926, when it
was built).
And I’m hearing about the next generation, the children of Peter
and Van, all in their 30s, who are taking up the mantle, inspired by
