“Creating an atmosphere in which
people feel comfortable speaking their
minds without running the risk of offending people is enormously important,”
says Herb Kelleher, former CEO of Southwest Airlines. Southwest doesn’t just talk
the talk; it walks the walk, supporting an
environment in which people can speak
their minds.
“Every idea—no matter how
ar-fetched, how wild or how out of
the ballpark—has to be responded to
promptly and respectfully,” says Kelleher, noting that you won’t get bold, fresh
ideas if you don’t encourage them.
Overly nice guys, though, need to step

“People tend to mix up their priori-ies between service to the company
versus service to the people,” says Terry
Stinson, former CEO of Bell Helicopter. This captures the true spirit of the
overly nice guys’ dilemma. The more
that can be done to focus them on job
performance, the more effective they
will become.
In the end, this is really about
balance. Overly nice guys in today’s
economy—in any economy, for that
matter—must be more focused on
results. Does this mean that they should
join the dark side by becoming jerks?
Absolutely not. However, they can learn
from the jerks that get ahead, without
becoming one.
