the young cashier, was kind enough to lower the alt rock when I strolled in at 6: 30 a.m. At Charlie’s Restaurant, I chowed on delicious venison chops after getting my buzz on with a tangy Pear Mint Mojito.

The best meal I had was at Caribbean Cowboy. I’m very picky about duck (if it’s gamy at all, I go ballistic), but the duck rolls here were fantastic. And the Bayou Cakes were mouthwatering. I’d tell you what was in them, but I had already downed two Painkillers (a whopper of a cocktail) and was having trouble writing. Drinking alone is ordinarily pretty sad (Leaving Lake Placid, starring Nicolas Cage?), but the atmosphere at Caribbean Cowboy was so convivial, there was no chance I’d plunge into a depression and throw myself into the lake (Mirror or Placid).

My vote: Give the Winter Games to Lake Placid again; it deserves the world’s attention. Actually, scratch that. Lake Placid is perfect the way it is: vibrant but intimate, a small-town wonder with Olympian-size charm.
