Boston
Tradition!
From Russia with love
If you get to see Fiddler on the Roof this season
at the Boston Opera House, you’ll most likely
find yourself singing or mumbling the infectious words “If I were a rich man / ya ha deedle
deedle, bubba bubba deedle deedle dum” as
you make your way through the holiday season, shopping, cooking and traveling.
Set in a small Russian town at the turn of
the 20th century, Fiddler tells the story of the
dairyman Tevye (the role made famous by
Zero Mostel) and his happiness and woe living with his wife, Golde, and their five daughters. The story is about Jewish family life
and takes crowd-pleasing jabs at tsarist rule.
The good-natured kvetching and celebrating includes unforgettable music (“To Life!,”
“If I Were a Rich Man,” “Sunrise, Sunset,”
“Matchmaker” and, of course, “Tradition”)
combined with great choreography. For all
ages. Nov. 3–15. bostonoperahouse.com.
