ideas ever assembled. Patrons will encounter
some 65 machines created from da Vinci’s
drawings, many made using methods and
materials from his era. Among the pieces
are his glider, helicopter, bicycle, submarine and military tank. Another part of the
show, “Secrets of the Mona Lisa,” details the
work of French engineer Pascal Cotte, who
used sophisticated imaging techniques to
see beneath the surface of the world’s most
famous painting. The exhibit, “Da Vinci—The

Happy Birthday,
Old Bird
To be grimly ironic,
you could visit the
grave of Edgar
Allan Poe on his
birthday, Jan. 19.
Or you could just
do what Poe might
have done and
head out for good
food and drink.
You can do just
that, while still honoring Poe, at the
Annabel Lee Tavern, aptly named
for his last poem.
Opened in 2007,
the restaurant has
been earning local
praise for good
food at a good
price as well as for
innovative cock-
tails, often named
after Poe’s works.
The Masque of
the Red Death, for
instance, might
make an apropos
beginning to an
evening—or a
portentous end.
The Pit and the
Pendulum, built
on a foundation
of tequila, might
fit a daring mood.
While sipping and
waiting for wings,
ribs or fish tacos,
peruse the many
relics of Poe’s life
and work diplayed
on the walls. At
your peril, neglect
to raise a glass
to the old Raven
himself. 601 S.
