Re-construction
Paper
Following an artistic paper trail
Creating art by destroying paper? It sounds
counterintuitive. Nonetheless, that is the
basis for the remarkable and eye-popping
“Slash: Paper Under the Knife” exhibit at
the Museum of Arts and Design. Of course,
the paper is not so much destroyed as reconstructed in myriad ways—cut with knives,
scissors and lasers, or burned, shredded
or torn, then reconfigured as something
altogether new.
A striking example is Alex, a life-size
human figure comprising hundreds of close-
up photographs of the subject, sliced, diced
and reassembled to form a three-dimensional
statue. Another highlight is the clev-
erly named Placebos, a massive wall of
flowers made from the instructional
inserts that accompany prescription
drugs—in this case those used by the
artist’s friends and family. With medi-
cations covering the spectrum from
hay fever to AIDS, this is a poignant
catalog if ever there was one.
