ASUS EEE PC 1001PX:
There are two big knocks on
netbooks in general: They are
underpowered and they aren’t
durable. To address these
issues, Asus, which helped
pioneer the ultramobile PC
category, has encased this net-
book in carbon fiber, allowing
it to better absorb the scrapes
and scratches that come with daily use. And, on the inside, an Intel
Atom processor keeps its Windows 7 operating system zipping
along. All this for less than the price of a PlayStation 3 means that
incoming freshmen need to rethink what gift they’d like for high
school graduation. $299; asus.com
2GO CONVERTIBLE CLASSMATE PC NL2: This rugged, 10-inch
swivel-screen netbook is an entry into the kiddie computer market, but don’t call
it a LeapFrog. Sure, the Windows-powered device caters to younger students with
a package of educational software and parental controls, and it has antibacterial
finishing to combat all those icky fingers. But its swiveling screen lets the Classmate
do something that even high-end grown-up laptops don’t: Flip and fold the netbook
and it turns into a tablet. $499; ctlcorp.com
