York governor and U.S. vice president,
was a modern art lover, and he dotted
the grounds with sculptures by Picasso,
Moore, Calder, Nevelson and many
others. A tour of the private underground galleries includes a collection
of Picasso tapestries. And the Coach
Barn—which only a Rockefeller would
call a barn—houses classic cars and
horse-drawn carriages.
And no visit here is complete without
a side trip to Union Church of Pocantico
Hills. This simple stone church features
stained-glass windows by Henri Matisse
and Marc Chagall, commissioned by—
who else?—the Rockefellers.
