Defining
Moments
Five decades later, a
celebration of JFK’s stunning
primary win in West Virginia
Celebrating the 50th anniversary of John F.
Kennedy’s historic landslide state primary
victory in West Virginia, the Kennedy Presidential Library in South Boston has gathered
an extensive exhibit chronicling the win. Considered by many historians to be one of the
most significant state primaries in American
political history, Kennedy’s overwhelming
victory in West Virginia established him as a
strong and viable candidate for president.

CITY GUIDE
Boston
Photographs, artifacts, letters—even
clothing worn by Jacqueline Kennedy while
campaigning with her husband—have been
collected from the Kennedy Library collection, the National Archives and the White
House to illuminate the compelling story of
how the people of economically distressed,
overwhelmingly Protestant communities in
the South put their trust in the charismatic
junior senator whose Boston accent spoke
to them about hope. The jewel of this exhibit
is a series of Kennedy’s original handwritten
notes, never before displayed, revealing his
own doubts about the outcome of the race.
