Goodbye, CBGB. Hello, DBGB
Just as the Bowery was getting polished,
the famed rock venue CBGB, which for
over three decades hosted bands such
as the Ramones, Blondie and Pearl Jam,
closed because of a rent dispute. The
city mourned the closing as the end
of an era, and perhaps nothing more
acutely signaled the dramatic changes
afoot in the Bowery than menswear
designer John Varvatos turning the
culturally sacred space into a clothing
store. Varvatos, however, has made a
decent stab at preserving the vibe, keep-
ing intact the old walls, plastered with
graffiti and original concert posters, and
stocking vinyl and vintage audio equip-
ment. For that reason, it’s fun to stop in,
even if you can’t afford one of Varvatos’
uberstylish suits.
The opening of a new restaurant by
Chef Daniel Boulud downtown—let
alone in the Bowery—also was notable;
his other five restaurants are all in posh
neighborhoods above 40th Street. He
named it DBGB Kitchen and Bar—a
tongue-in-cheek ode to the Bowery’s
longtime resident. The place is lively
and packs a crowd, and the menu is
sufficiently lowbrow to appease the
downtown crowd. The specialty is hot
dogs and hamburgers, though the house-made links, such as the pork sausage
with pommes mousseline and truffle, are
