CITY GUIDE
Providence
Take a minute to envision an art museum: You
see room after room of paintings, sculptures,
artifacts. You see people quietly shuffling
from exhibit to exhibit and guards asking
you to keep it down and stay away from the
priceless works of art. What you probably
don’t think of is a gallery filled with dancing,
laughter and libations. But, after the sun goes
down on the second Friday of every month,
the Museum of Art, Rhode Island School of
Design loosens up for Music Fridays, a not-to-
be-missed evening of live music and fine food.
On Jan. 14, the RISD museum hosts Sauce
for an evening of rock and rhythm and blues,
and the featured exhibition that evening
is the European galleries. On Feb. 11, spice
things up with Slippery Sneakers, a Cajun and
zydeco band—that evening’s featured exhibit
is “Changing Poses: An Intimate Look at the
Artist’s Model.”

Fun
Stop by the museum for an acculturating evening. After all, fine art is great, but
wouldn’t you enjoy it so much more with a
glass of wine in hand? $8. risdmuseum.org.
If you’re sure
on your skates,
take a spin on
the ice (which is
twice the size of
New York’s Rockefeller Center rink)
nightly until 10
p.m., surrounded
by the lights
and skyscrapers
of downtown.
If you—or your
skates—are rusty,
pop in for an adult
refresher course,
held every Sunday.
There’s nothing
like warm cheeks
in the crisp air to
remind you that
there are good
things about winter, after all. Rental
skates available.
