Farewell, American Idiot
On April 24, the rock band Green Day’s lead
singer, Billie Joe Armstrong, played the character
St. Jimmy in the final performance of
American
Idiot
on Broadway. The rock opera, which ran for
27 previews and 421 regular performances, starts
a national tour in the fall. Based on the 2004
Green Day album of the same name, as well as
the band’s
21st Century Breakdown
,
American
Idiot
tells the coming-of-age tale of three young,
disaffected, working-class men and their frustra-
tion with the America they’ve inherited.

On May 25, New York Restoration Project (NYRP), founded by
Bette Midler in 1995 to clean and green New York
City parks, community gardens and open spaces,
hosted its 10th annual spring picnic at Gracie
Mansion in Manhattan’s Carl Schurz Park. Mayor
Michael Bloomberg joined Midler in celebrating
the partnership of NYRP and the City of New York
as they work together to plant 1 million new trees
in the city by 2017. Master of Ceremonies Sherri
Shepherd hosted the evening’s events, which in-
cluded music by John Pizzarelli and a tree auction
led by comedian Judy Gold.
