Tinseltown in Tribeca
A fiercely independent
film festival in a proudly
resurgent neighborhood
Can art save the world? If you’re talking about the tribeca Film Festival, maybe it can, one neighborhood at a time. the festival, now in its 11th year, was launched in 2001 after the terror attacks on the world trade towers with a
goal, in part, to bring attention and spending to tribeca, which, just
north of Ground zero, was financially devastated in the months after
the attacks.
Nancy Schafer, executive director of the festival, remembers
wearing a gas mask to tour one of the first theaters the festival used
for a screening.
