The Poem’s
the Thing
Brush up on your iambic
pentameter and celebrate
If you’re in or near new york’s Penn station on april 26, don’t be surprised if a stranger hands you a poem. It’s one way that the american academy of Poets will be celebrating Poem in your Pocket day, part
of national Poetry Month. For lovers of verse, april is the
coolest month.
The academy initiated national Poetry Month in 1996
to “introduce more people to the pleasures of poetry,” as
president and executive director Tree swenson puts it.
The academy’s website ( poets.org) has a wealth of information on events, and, for poetry paired with star power, its
annual benefit at lincoln Center (april 5 this year) always
draws a-list luminaries to read their favorite poems.
