A Landmark
Collection
Central and South America
as never seen before
In the mid-1940s a young man named John
Bourne, who had become fascinated by
Mayan culture, suddenly found himself at
the forefront of an important discovery in
Mexico, and a life of collecting began. Last

“Exploring Art of the Ancient Americas: The
John Bourne Collection Gift” runs through
May 20 and shows 134 pieces from the collection. The materials (silver, gold, stone,
clay and fibers) and the depictions of human
figures, deities and even dogs reveal not just
the range of the cultures’ artwork but also the
makeup of their political and religious beliefs.
