Uncorked at
Winterthur
Presenting our past and
present as seen through the
prism of a wineglass
From the ancient world to the digital age,
wine has played a major role in the way we
mark the passage of time. One’s life could, in
fact, be measured by glasses of wine, from the
celebration of a birth to a toast in memory of
a passing. The history of wine and its varied
functions in society is explored in “Uncorked!
Wine, Objects & Tradition,” an expansive
exhibit at the Winterthur Museum, Garden
and Library that runs through 2012.

Champagne Charlie, Downs Collection Col. 240, 73x171.
More than 300 objects from around the
world, from Roman wine vessels and Chinese
bottles to British engravings and editorial cartoons and colonial American drinking games,
trace wine from production to marketing and
distribution. The core of the exhibit, however,
naturally focuses on the consumption of
wine—where it was imbibed, for what reasons,
and the effect of wine on the social, political
and religious views of past centuries, including
a section on the temperance movement.
Because Wilmington is home to a wide
and celebrated collection of wineries in its
own right, programming also includes a look
at regional wine production through lectures
and (best of all) wine tastings. Consider it
the history of civilization, with a plummy
nose and a refined finish. Admission to
“Uncorked!” is included in the ticket price
for entry into the museum and is free for
members. winterthur.org.
