CITY GUIDE
Providence
Get Out
Summer offers alfresco
entertainment in Providence
Now that it’s finally possible to ditch that winter coat for good, it’s time to get outside and
enjoy the warm weather. Providence provides
ample opportunity to be entertained and out-of-doors at the same time.
Every Thursday at dusk, starting in June,
Movies on the Block screens a movie on the
side of a building. Bring a lawn chair and head
to Grant’s Block, at the intersection of Union
and Westminster streets, to enjoy this beloved
city tradition, curated by hometown Hollywood director Michael Corrente.
Tuesday afternoons bring a fleet of deli-
cious lunch choices to Grant’s Block for
Food Truck Tuesdays,
where the best of
Providence’s fast-
growing food truck
culture gathers from
noon to 2 p.m. Sample
everything from Poco
Loco’s Mexican food
to Mama Kim’s Korean
BBQ to the vegan des-
serts of Like No Udder. indowncity.com
A Historic Event
The burning of
HMS Gaspee,
which happened
at Warwick Point
in 1772, was as
important as the
Boston Tea Party
in spurring the
American Revolu-
tion. Rhode Island
celebrates in style
all summer long
with Gaspee Days.
The celebration
kicks off Memorial
Day weekend with
the Arts and Crafts
Festival, May
26–28. During the
festival, roughly
150 vendors sell-
ing one-of-a-kind
handmade goods
will show off their
work to an esti-
mated 50,000
people. Food, fam-
ily entertainment
and live music
make the festival
an all-day event.
Then, June 8–10,
the actual Gaspee
Days celebration
includes a parade,
a colonial encamp-
ment where people
can explore and
engage with cos-
tumed historic
reenactors, and
the burning of a
symbolic Gaspee
to culminate the
weekend.
