socialite spy, and is adapting it for the screen. she has just
wrapped a film Decoding Annie Parker, in which she gets to
rock a full 1980s look, “complete with a crazy perm and
acid-washed jeans.” Her hobbies—“hiking, crossword
puzzles, scrabble, learning amazing facts”—are virtuous
and she prizes repose and reflection so much that she can
be found in the quiet car of the train when she is traveling
the eastern seaboard.
“it’s nice just to be able to watch the expanse of scenery, and listen to your ipod,” she says.
Musical talent runs in the Jones family and she is an
accomplished pianist—“Chopin’s Opus 53 is my jam,” she
says, singing the opening strains—and though her father
asks her at least once a month when she is going to make
a record, Jones believes she’d have to lock herself in a
basement and study music theory for six months before
such an undertaking. Having recently returned from a
workshop at the royal academy of dramatic art, she says
she’d be terrified but thrilled to make her professional
stage debut, perhaps doing shakespeare in the park or a
broadway musical.
PERFORMANCES
(And one she’d rather forget)
➊ Karen Scarfolli in
Freaks and Geeks (2000):
I played the school bully. It was the
acting experience that kind of shaped
my whole career. Before, I would just
wait to be told what to do but working
with Judd Apatow, Jason Segel and
Seth Rogen—all the cute funny Jewish
boys–showed me what I wanted to be
as an actor.
➋ Zooey Rice in
I Love You, Man (2009):
I loved every minute of making that
movie, and I got to play Paul Rudd’s
fiancee. How great is that?
➌ Marylin Delpy in
The Social Network (2010):
I was acutely aware and trying not to
be, and so nervous about working with
one of the greatest filmmakers. David
Fincher is the smartest, coolest person
I have ever met in my life. So whatever
my performance was like in that movie,
I am so proud to be in it. I have never
seen a movie more times in a theater
and paid for it than The Social Network.
➍ Nat in Monogamy (2010):
It’s an imperfect movie about an eroding relationship and there’s a lot of
nice very real acting in there. And my
co-star was Chris Messina, who plays
my new love interest in Celeste and
Jesse Forever.
➎ Veronica Martin in
The Muppets (2011):
I am incredibly proud to be in The
Muppets, because they are the most famous people in my brain from the time
I was little to now. And I have always
loved Fozzie Bear, but I really bonded
with Kermit.
THE ONE TO AVOID:
Dr. Frank-N-Furter in
The Rocky Horror Picture Show
25th Anniversary (2000).
Talking about this is the opposite of
protecting you from it. It’s so hideous
and everybody in it is embarrassing.
I was dressed as the Tim Curry character with black lipstick, sideburns and
fishnets and I sang “I Can Make You a
Man.” I won’t ever watch it.
