Providence on the
Big Screen
Even if you’ve never been to Providence
before, you’ve likely heard of WaterFire. The
art installation, in its second decade, was at
the forefront of Providence’s cultural renaissance and is now a global export (creator
Barnaby Evans took the idea to Singapore
last year). At sunset on WaterFire nights,
boats travel down Providence River, lighting
braziers that illuminate the water. Gondolas
float past and a lively street festival along the
river attracts thousands of visitors. Features
The stars come out
for Flickers, the
Rhode Island Inter-
national Film Fes-
tival. This year’s
festival, Aug. 7–12,
will screen more
than 200 new films
from all over the
world. Although
the festival is
based in Provi-
dence, screenings
happen all over
the state and are
complemented by
lectures, industry
workshops and
meet-and-greets
with celebrity
guests. Now in
its 15th year, the
event is the big-
gest film festival
in New England
and the only one
here to qualify
movies for Oscar
contention. film-
