The Flea Market at Eastern Market
On Seventh Street N.E ., one block from Pennsylvania Avenue (the Eastern Market stop on the Metro); easternmarket.net
In its 24th season, the Flea Market at Eastern Market is in the last remaining food market in Washington. Just a quick walk from the Library of Congress, the Capitol and the Shakespeare Library, the market has become a regular D.C. destination for locals and out-of-towners alike.
“After all these years, it’s still very much a neighborhood market,” says manager Tom Rall. Weather dictates the number of exhibitors, but on average you’ll find up to 200 vendors selling antiques, collectibles, crafts and fine art. “It started out initially as an antiques and collectibles market,” Rall says. “But now we have exhibitors from five continents and more than 40 countries, all selling indigenous objects and artworks.”
The goods: Antique photography, prints, maps, furniture ranging from the Victorian period to modernist, vintage clothes with a focus on textiles and the Deco period.
Extras: After shopping, be sure to indulge in what locals consider the best crab cake in town at Market Lunch (225 Seventh St. S. E.; 202-547-8444).
