Tugboat fun: The Wilmington riverfront is a bevy of activity when a variety of tugboats—the “workhorses” of the maritime industry—line the Christina River from the Kalmar Nyckel Foundation shipyard to Fort Christina Park. Wilmington maritime heritage comes to life through activities celebrating its rich tugboat history, including tugboat races, a Best Tattoo contest among the tugboat crews, all-day musical entertainment and a shrimp feast. Tugboats will illuminate the Seventh Street Peninsula each evening.
Longwood Gardens hosts the Festival of Fountains, and these waterlillies are part of its horticultural showcase.
More than 100 crafters and exhibitors are expected. The Great Wilmington Tugboat Celebration, July 6– 8. Visit kalmarnyckel.org.
Shakespeare in the park: The Delaware Shakespeare Festival is fast becoming one of Greater Wilmington’s most popular traditions. This year’s featured production is the historical drama Richard III. The open-air festival runs from July 27 to Aug. 11 on the grounds of Rockwood Park, in the shadow of Joseph Shipley’s rural Gothic mansion. Enjoy
a midsummer’s eve picnic while actors discuss the play’s plot and entertain the audience with background information before the show. Visit delshakes.org for details and hotel packages.
