behind home plate to right field. A
video screen looms high over the hall’s
wide concourse, which leads to concession stands, restaurants, a Yankees
museum and nearly 12,000 square feet
of retail shops, including an art gallery
and memorabilia store. It’s a setting
that might make you think you’ve wandered into an upscale shopping mall.
The bleacher area in center field,
a virtual dead spot in the old stadium,
brims with activity. Fabled Monument
Park, a fan-favorite collection of bronze
plaques memorializing Yankee greats,
now stands just beyond the center field
fence. A sports bar overlooks Monument
Park, and an outdoor food court overlooks the sports bar. Among other dining options are the Yankee Steakhouse
and Grill Room and a Hard Rock Café,
both of which will remain open year-round. Looming over the center field
bleachers, the new stadium’s high-definition main scoreboard measures
59 feet high and 101 feet wide, more
than twice as large as the one it replaced.
As at Citi Field, seating at Yankee
Stadium brings fans closer to the action,
with wider seats that are turned toward
the infield. The backstop is just 52 feet be-
hind home plate, 18 feet closer than at the
old stadium. The effect
is dramatic: Not even
the pitcher, standing
60 feet 6 inches away
atop the mound, will
be as close to the batter
as the Legends Suite
ticket holders seated
in the first few rows
behind home plate.
Like the Mets, the
Yankees are hoping
that their inaugural
season in their new
home sees them back
in the playoff hunt
after a disappointing
finish in 2008. Which
brings us to the question on the minds of all
New York baseball fans
hese days: Do the new
stadiums come with
improved pitching?
