It’s Good to
be Wicked
You know about “Popular.” But did you
know about green? Even if you haven’t
seen Wicked, the Broadway show that
tells the backstory of the witches of
Oz, you’ve likely heard its most famous song.
“Popular” is the kind of tune you keep humming out of the theater, and not just because
the melody is catchy. e lyrics outline the
plan for one college coed to help another with
her social well-being, and the scene is a key
moment in the musical, which takes place
before Dorothy arrives on the Yellow Brick Road.
Elphaba, who has yet to become the Wicked
Witch of the West, is coming into her own green
skin. Galinda, who isn’t yet Glinda, the Good
Witch of the North, is learning that blond, sassy
and popular isn’t all it’s cracked up to be.
