AND BEYOND
e Wicked cast and
crew are among the
greenest on the Great
White Way.
for Broadway Goes Green, a collaborative e ort
by the theater community to be mindful of the
environment. e Wicked sta has been e-mailing
instead of using “While You Were Out” notes and
printed memos; the crew has been replacing old
light bulbs with more environmentally friendly
ones; and aching actors have been easing their
pain with frozen vegetables rather than ice packs
filled with chemicals.
Indeed, a very bright green Elphaba was all
dressed up to introduce New York City Mayor
Michael Bloomberg at a press conference
announcing the e ort in November. At the time,
David Stone, a Wicked producer, told e New
York Times, “ e theater community has always
been at the forefront of social change, and we
have been left behind on this one a little bit.”
But the show is current as ever. e new cast
stars Nicole Parker (MADtv) as Elphaba and the
very perky Alli Mauzey (Hairspray, Cry-Baby) as
Galinda. e wow-me theatrics—especially the
showstopper “Defying Gravity” at the end of the
first act—still thrill Broadway fanatics. (And even
the most cynical of audiences can’t help but be
slack-jawed.)
And after seeing the nods to the book and
movie throughout, you’ll never again watch e
Wizard of Oz without just a bit of sympathy for
the Wicked Witch of the West.
As Kermit the Frog once famously said, “It’s
not easy being green.”
But everybody’s trying.
