WHAT’S HOT ON BROADWAY...
Philadelphia has played host to some serious historical events, but it’s got a funny side, too. What else would explain those nutty, New Year’s Day-parading
Mummers or the peculiar local attachment to
delicacies featuring Cheez Whiz?
;at funny side will be thrust into the
potlight this summer when the Philadelphia
;eatre Company and Chicago’s legendary
comedy group, ;e Second City, team up for
“;e City of Nutterly Love: Funny As Bell!”, a
hilarious send-up of all things Philadelphia.
“With all its eccentricities and its revolving
ast of political characters, we just felt Phil-
adelphia was ripe for satire,” says Sara Garonzik,
the theater company’s producing artistic
director. “;e show is really funny on two levels.
Philadelphians will get all the inside jokes but
you can be a tourist and really laugh, too.”

premiere, which features two scripted acts and
one improvised one.

;e professional training ground for comedic
uperstars like Tina Fey, Bill Murray, Steve
Carell and Mike Myers, ;e Second City has
been a fixture on the Chicago scene for more
than 50 years. In 2006, its theatrical wing began
collaborating with stage companies in other
cities to create custom shows that turn the
group’s keen satirical sights on places other
than its hometown. So far, Denver, Pittsburgh
and Atlanta have gotten the Second City treatment, to the delight of local audiences and
critics alike. Second City’s Jenna Deja, who
grew up near Philadelphia and used to manage
the Arden ;eatre, is producing the show. She
says Chicago and Philadelphia’s shared status
as “second cities” overshadowed by New York
made it easier for Second City writers to
understand what makes Philly tick.
