to the inspiring and family-friendly Billy Elliot:

year, Billy manages to be highly entertaining
and chock-full of positive messages for parents
and children alike. With music by Elton John and
direction by Stephen Daldry, who helmed the
2000 film upon which the musical was based,
the story centers on a boy from the British
working class who realizes he has an undeniable
gift for ballet. ;e boy must decide whether to
develop the talent that’s
sure to separate him from
his family and friends, and
his father must overcome
his own prejudice to let his
son follow his dream.
At the heart of the production are three extraordinary young actors who share the role of Billy. David Alvarez, Trent Kowalik and Kiril
Kulish won a joint Tony for Best Actor in a Musical this year and all of them carry a bit of Billy in their own personal stories. Each found a passion for dance at an early age and each went from relative obscurity to center stage in a short time.
Discovered through a nationwide talent search, the three went through a rigorous audition process designed to determine who had the singing and dancing skills and, above all, the stamina, to carry a Broadway show.
“It was pretty hard,” says Kulish. “I was only trained in classical ballet and I’d never done any tap dancing or singing or much acting before, so I had to learn all of that during the audition process.”
