Front Four—the four steep and imposing double black diamond runs cut down
the face of Mount Mansfield.
Finding New Terrain
About a half-hour away from Stowe is
the sleepy Mad River Valley, home to the
idyllic Vermont towns of Warren and
Waitsfield plus another of the East’s best
ski resorts, Sugarbush, which also spans
two mountains. When it opened in 1958,
the resort attracted so many jet-setters,
including the Kennedy clan, that it was
nicknamed Mascara Mountain. Today,
however, the only eye candy here is the
sweeping view of the Green Mountain
wilderness from the twin summits, and
Sugarbush, which is owned and operated
by a small group of local ski fanatics, is
known for its distinctly noncorporate
Vermont feel.
Fortunately, the new owners also
inherited the fruits of one of the largest
single-season expansions in ski history.
In a single flourish in the 1990s, the
previous owners installed seven new
lifts, including the nation’s fastest high-speed quad connecting the bases of Mt.
Ellen and Lincoln Peak, and tripled the
resort’s snowmaking capacity.

Following in these ambitious footsteps, the new owners have replaced
two more chairlifts with high-speed
versions, and for this winter have added
75 acres of brand-new wooded terrain
on both peaks. Sugarbush was already
at the forefront of glade skiing, but this
new effort to open up tree skiing to a
wider audience features careful clearing to reduce the fear factor glades can
cause. Off the slopes, the resort also has
been pushing hard: Sugarbush refurbished its main hotel, built new luxury
rental residences and totally renovated
its sports and fitness center.
Something for Snowboarders, Too
Farther south, almost smack in the
middle of the state, lies the longtime
800-pound gorilla of Eastern skiing,
Killington. Its seven mountains include
nearly 30 lifts, 200 trails and close to
90 miles of downhill skiing—more than
enough for any weeklong visit. Not content to rest on its laurels, Killington has
pumped $15 million into improvements
over the past two years.
