pola were making studio movies that
were unparalleled, and I think that can
happen again. The trick is to have people
like me take less money upfront so that
if they make money, you make money on

to make the movie you wanted to make.
We’re trying to stay within a budget
because we want to make movies, but we
don’t want to make tent poles. There’s
nothing wrong with them, but there’s
not really a place for me if that’s the only
business in town.”
This determination to put art over
commerce in the effort to make movies
that matter has made Clooney one of the
most respected artists of his generation,
not to mention a role model for like-
minded friends such as Matt Damon.
“The careers that I look to for inspiration are guys like Clooney, who are
acting, writing, directing, and doing it
all on their own terms,” Damon says of
his Ocean’s Eleven co-star who also produced The Informant!. “I love writing
and acting and I really want to direct,
so I’ve been taking these last 12 years to
carefully study the craft of filmmaking.
It’s hard to have a long career in this
business, but George is smart about the
work he’s doing and has integrity about
the choices he makes.”
Art and Activism
That integrity extends to Clooney’s activism off screen as well, whether he’s working to find a resolution to the conflict in
Darfur through his organization Not on
Our Watch (which he co-founded with
Damon, Brad Pitt and Don Cheadle)
or raising funds for earthquake victims
