New Haven, Conn.
America’s oldest college art museum
was founded in 1832 when artist John
Trumbull donated nearly 100 of his paintings. The collection has grown to more
than 185,000 objects dating from ancient
times to the present day and ranging
from Greek and Roman sculpture to such
iconic works as Vincent van Gogh’s Night
Café and Edward Hopper’s Rooms by the
Sea. A highlight is the vibrant African Art
exhibit, which features an intriguing array
of objects such as ritual figures, masks
and headdresses.
After exploring the galleries, relax in
the Wurtele Sculpture Garden or peruse a
selection of art books in the lobby. During
the academic year, themed gallery tours
are given by Yale undergraduates.

This 48-room Gilded Age mansion, purchased by a railroad magnate for his son
in 1878, is filled with more than 50,000
objets d’art. Two of its jaw-dropping
features are a gold-plated bathroom and
a private theater decorated by famed
Russian painter Léon Bakst, where you
can catch a performance during the
museum’s concert series.
As you meander through the man-
sion (shown by guided tour), “look up,
down, left, right—everywhere,” sug-
gests director and curator James Archer
Abbott. “This is a layered collection that
always reveals something new with each
return visit.”
Like a Picasso, perhaps, or one of the
largest private collections of Tiffany glass.
A sculpture exhibit is on view on the
26-acre grounds, which include Italian-style gardens, until Sept. 26.
