REVUE
AND BEYOND
Sean Hayes and Kristin Chenoweth several times in the ensuing decades, most notably in a staged 1997 concert for New York City Center’s Encores! program with Martin Short and Christine Baranski. ;e current revival, direc- ted and choreographed by Rob Ashford, features two “new” Bacharach/David songs in its roster—the clas- sics “I Say a Little Prayer,” which yielded a Top 10 hit for Dionne Warwick in 1967, and “A House Is Not a Home,” which charted for both War- wick and Brook Benton in 1964. Both receive sparkling renditions by Chenoweth, whom Broadway habitués know from her star turns in Wicked and You’re a Good Man, Charlie Brown. ;e additions enliven an already sparkling show, which features not only two bona fide hit songs—the title number and “I’ll Never Fall in Love Again,” both of which elped to establish Warwick as one of Bacharach and David’s chief interpreters—but also Tony- nominated performances by Hayes as the hapless and upwardly aspiring Chuck Bennett and Che- noweth as Fran, the waitress he admires from a distance. Actor-director Tony Goldwyn (Ghost) is Chuck’s boss, who is dating Fran on the side, while Shannon plays Marge MacDougall, an unin- hibited barfly Chuck meets while pining for Fran. Shannon replaces Katie Finneran, who won 2010 Tony, Drama Desk and Outer Circle awards for her hilarious performance. ;ough the show’s choreography dazzles and its music gleams with the brilliance of Bacharach, it is the heart that beats in Promises, Promises that has brought audiences to the show. It’s boy- loves-girl, boy-loses-girl-and-fights-to-get-her- back, and it doesn’t get more Broadway than that.
