President Adams, however, was not a
slave owner, and his wife, Abigail, publicly
denounced the practice.
In the end, the designers attempted to
tell the stories of all the residents, using
interpretive panels, glass-covered peepholes revealing the house’s foundation
below, and a spot for silent reflection. A
marble fireplace anchors each room and
an LED screen above rolls films on various topics, from the birth of American
democracy to the once obscured stories of
the slaves who were kept here (including
two who later escaped). The open-air site
