But the plays of Martin McDonagh focus
on dysfunction and make Real Housewives look
pedestrian. In A Skull in Connemara (Jan. 13–
Feb. 6; lanterntheater.org), the middle play in
McDonagh’s 1996–97 trilogy set in a rural village, the main character is obliged to exhume

Irish playwrights in Philadelphia
Feline abuse; a widower who disinters skeletons every seven years to make room for the
freshly dead in an overcrowded graveyard;
a horse-faced tomboy working as a pump
jockey—these are some of the circumstances
in works by Irish playwrights being produced
in Philadelphia. The Annenberg Center begins
an entire season focused on Irish playwrights

is the brutish Mad Padraic, whose father and
brother attempt to save their own skins by
concealing the death of his beloved cat, Wee
