CHAT WITH FRIENDS
Big Bear Café
1700 First St. NW; 202-470-
5543 • Crowley’s favorite
post-show hangout is
where she relaxes with
friends. “[It] reminds me of
the Seattle coffeehouses
when they first started,”
she says. “And it’s in a lively
urban neighborhood with a
great pulse to it.”

Shakespeare Theatre Co.

“I love it because it’s an
intimate theater, and Shake-
speare has to be done inti-
mately,” Crowley says.
Why I Love ...
Washington, D.C.
With 30 years in the nation’s capital, CNN anchor
Candy Crowley may be the ultimate D.C. insider
The veteran of eight presidential campaigns, CNN’s Candy Crowley is as comfortable reporting from Capitol Hill as
she is out in the field relaying history as
it’s made. Crowley’s even-handed style
of reporting has covered stories ranging
from the 9/11 aftermath to the ceremonies
commemorating the 40th anniversary
of D-Day on the beach at Normandy. But
there’s nothing she loves more than being
smack in the middle of an adrenaline-charged election year.
“I’m very biased toward a great story,
and the political beat is a passionate one,”
Crowley says. “The 2008 election was
almost perfect because it involved no cer-
tain banner carrier on either side. The best
thing about covering politics is you don’t
know the ending.”
She began at CNN as a general
assignment reporter in 1987 and rose
through the ranks to become the network’s
chief political correspondent. For the past
year, she’s been host of the Sunday morn-
ing political talk show State of the Union.
PONDER HISTORY
The FDR Memorial
900 Ohio Drive S W •
“It’s spectacular,” she says.
“All the hallmarks of FDR’s
presidency are shown here,
from the wars to the bread
lines. To me, it’s a very calm-
ing place. It says that if we
made it through all this, we
can make it through today’s
challenges.”
GO ORGANIC
Restaurant Nora
2132 Florida Ave. NW; 202-
462-5143 • “It was the first
certified organic restaurant
in the country,” says Crow-
ley, who’s a longtime veg-
etarian. “They have great
gnocchi. During springtime
it’s paired wonderfully with
spring vegetables.”
