So, instead of placing novice scullers directly into racing sculls, as I tried at Craftsbury, Banks assigns newbies to Alden singles, otherwise known as “ tubbies.” Twice as wide as the racing scull and shorter in length, they’re almost impossible to tip over.

Community Rowing separates its scullers into four classes, with each class meeting twice a week for six weeks. Sculling I gives you a taste of the sport as you get a feel for the oars in the wider boat. In Sculling II, one slips into a more slender boat and hones a technique, venturing farther out into the river. For the Sculling III class, Banks places rowers in doubles and quads, further enhancing that seamless stroke and balance as rowers pick up speed. Finally, in Sculling IV, you transition to a 27-foot racing scull and get primed to venture out on the Charles all by your lonesome.

“When students get out of the tubbies and are able to link together four to five good strokes, you see this light in their eyes and a smile plastered on their face. That’s when I know they’re hooked,” Banks says.
