performance is part of a four-
day celebration of Bastille Day,
France’s national holiday, July 14–
17 ( easternstate.org/bastille-day).
Along with the mock storming
of the infamous Paris prison—to
which attendees are invited to
come in costume, whether as peas-
ants or as royalty—there is a street
festival, a bar crawl and local res-
taurant specials.
Another bash on this side of
the Atlantic is Bastille Day on
60th Street, an afternoon block
party in New York City on July 10

can dancers headline a music-
and-dance showcase and edible
entertainment includes a wine-
and-cheese tasting.
In Boston, revelers will take over
several Back Bay streets for a July 15
nighttime gathering (frenchcultural
center.org; tickets required), listen-
ing to live music and feasting on
decadent French fare.
Francophiles in Washington,
D.C., have double the chance to
display some joie de vivre. Party for
a cause at the Embassy of France’s
July 16 fete benefiting the Comité
Tricolore, a nonprofit organization
that provides healthcare and sup-
port to the sick and elderly (house
o; rancedc.org; tickets required).
At the Alliance Française de
Washington’s festivities July 16,
vintage cars will be on display
and crepes and champagne are
on the menu ( francedc.org; tickets
required). This year the annual
event is being held in conjunction
with a fête at the Hillwood Estate,
Museum and Gardens, where the
objets d’art on display include a
portrait of Marie Antoinette.
