Life Is a Veritable
Smorgasburg
Williamsburg has great food; it also has
some of New York’s best people-watching.
Smorgasburg (Saturdays, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.,
on the East River between North Sixth
and North Seventh streets), a weekly
neighborhood food market that debuted
this spring and runs well into the fall,
grants an abundance of both. Anchored
by a farmers market, Smorgasburg features more than 100 vendors of food of all
kinds—from the raw to the Mason-jarred
to the cooked-right-in-front-of-you. Among
its kaleidoscope of cuisines you’ll find a
wealth of local artisans and restaurateurs
offering their handiwork.
Conceived by curator Eric Demby,
in part to foster increased interaction
between upstate farmers and the neighborhood’s growing number of purveyors
and producers, Smorgasburg is an ideal
way to absorb much of the neighborhood’s
food culture in a single gulp.
a living, breathing thing ... and it needs
to be cared for in a certain way or else it
starts to die.”
At Bedford Cheese Shop, cheese
lives, as do the products of several
local artisans, including My Friend’s
Mustard, jam by Anarchy in a Jar, and
pickles by Sour Puss Pickles, Brooklyn
Brine and Mc Clure’s.
“The cool thing about being able to
work with all these people,” says Kamin,
“is that when they’re playing around and
experimenting, you get to be a part of it.”
Finally, you’ll want to get dessert
at the Van Leeuwen Artisan Ice Cream
truck, which, through Halloween, can
reliably be found on Bedford Street
between North Seventh and North
Eighth streets. Made in upstate New
York with milk and eggs sourced from
neighboring farms, and flavored with fine
ingredients from around the world, this
is ice cream unlike anything you’ll find in
a store, with unusual flavors such as Earl
Grey Tea and Palm Sugar. If you’re a first-
timer, though, cofounder Laura O’Neill
makes a strong case for starting with their
vanilla, made with two types of organic
vanilla beans aged for four months in oak
barrels with vodka and then ground into
a paste.
