the second stop of the 2011–12
Winter Dew Tour, featuring the
world’s top freeski and snowboard athletes competing in
slopestyle and superpipe events.
This will be Killington’s second year hosting Winter Dew’s
sole Eastern stop, the biggest
snow sports event in the East. It
represents yet another marker
in the evolution of downhill winter sports from their relatively
staid traditions to the extreme,
freestyle competitions that have
become more popular with each
passing season. It’s a transformation that has—sorry—snowballed
on the world stage with the International Olympic Committee’s
decision this past summer to add
ski and snowboard slopestyle
medal events to the 2014 Winter
Games in Sochi, Russia.
Killington’s own embrace of
these exciting trends can be seen
in its premier 22-foot superpipe
and in terrain parks such as the
Stash, the only such Jake Burton-designed course in the East. The
superpipe, recently expanded
from 18 feet, will be a focal point
of the Winter Dew competition,
as will a top-notch slopestyle
course with strategically placed
jumps and rails designed to
bring out the creativity and
athleticism of the world’s best
freeskiers and boarders.
With big names like Louie
Vito and Kelly Clark among the
competitors last year, this is
a chance for East Coasters to
see some of the most thrilling
winter sports action anywhere,
live and in person. Cutting-edge
musical acts also will be part of
the fun and, for those inspired to
get in on the action, Killington’s
trails and terrain parks—
including the Stash—will remain open
to the public. If you haven’t
booked yet, don’t despair—even
last-minute travelers are likely
to find a place to stay in a resort
town rich in lodging options.
