is Chester “ace” Bernstein (Dustin
hoffman), a wealthy ex-con who
gets around a law forbidding him to
own a horse by doing it through his
“beard” and limo driver, Gus (Den-
nis farina). ace likes things to go his
way and flies into in a table-tipping
rage when they don’t. he is power-
ful and, with three years in prison
behind him, has big plans we
suspect might involve a little
payback.
ace also loves horses, as does
everyone in Luck, as vehicles for
gambling, as magnificent ani-
mals or both.
a foursome of binocular-
toting railbirds, marcus (Kevin
Dunn), Jerry (Jason Gedrick),
Lonnie (ian hart) and renzo
(ritchie Coster), love horses so
much they practically live at the
track, studying workouts in the
morning and laying carefully
plotted bets in the afternoon.
