Minutes–style close-ups, she begins with the tale
of their first encounter.
Her narration dissolves to live action in
(where else?) a bar in Key West. The magnetism is immediate, and the first drink is a
three-fingered pour of rum, downed in one
gulp, a ritual that becomes a motif for the film
and presumably for their real lives.
Gellhorn is depicted as a swashbuckling,
fearless woman who will rush into an arena of
exploding bombs to rescue a suddenly motherless child and who could stand belly-to-bar
with Hemingway or any other man. At the
same time, she is sexy as all get-out, and the
love scenes between Kidman and Owen are
piping hot (keep a personal fan handy).
In real life, Gellhorn was in fact the larger-than-life, sharp-tongued war correspondent
HBO shows her to be, and also a tall, beautiful
woman not unlike Kidman. Born in 1908, she
covered many of the major conflicts of the 20th
century, working in the field even in her 80s.
Hemingway & Gellhorn, premièring May 28,
is chock-full of talent from the stars on the
screen (including David Strathairn, Parker
Posey, Tony Shalhoub, Peter Coyote, Joan
Chen and Robert Duvall) to the filmmakers:
