Early on a recent Sunday, blocks of D.C.’s Dupont Circle were strangely
silent. Parked cars glistened
with morning dew as I strolled
past empty dog parks and
popular breakfast spots filled
with only a handful of patrons.
By all appearances, this vibrant
neighborhood in the northwest
quadrant of the city was still
recovering from a hopping
Saturday night.
But as I turned a corner toward
Connecticut Avenue—one of
the main roads intersecting the
area’s landmark fountain—the
scene changed. It looked as if
all the residents were packed
into two short blocks, and they
clutched loaves of bread and bags
brimming with vegetables.
