Music Special
For 75 years, the Boston
Symphony Orchestra has
headed to the pastoral acreage
of Tanglewood
in residence, composing and
fine-tuning their own crafts.

public performances.
In this celebratory
75th year, the box office is

concerts by James Taylor
(a Tanglewood Fourth of
July tradition), cellist Yo-Yo
Ma with the Silk Road Ensemble, trumpeter
Chris Botti, and violinist Anne-Sophie Mutter. Other highlights include some eight
musical premieres, two historical concerts
from Tanglewood’s first season in 1937 (an all-Beethoven opener and, later, an all-Wagner
performance), and perhaps the fete of the
summer—composer John Williams’ 80th
birthday celebration. 888-266-1200;

of musicians, but rather is an intensive learning, teaching and performing festival that

Set on many tree-covered, rolling acres in
western Massachusetts, the grounds include
several stages (indoor and outdoor) and studios where talented protégés practice their
scales with master musicians and singers.
Meanwhile, master musicians and singers are
