The Network
The National Portrait Gallery
showcases power players
As the country’s focus turns to its elected lead-
ers, the National Portrait Gallery spotlights
faces that represent the most influential indi-
viduals of this era. The Penn Quarter museum
shows “The Network,” a portrait presentation
by artist Lincoln Schatz in conjunction with
the release of his new thought-provoking
book,
THE NET WORK: Portrait Conversations
.
Schatz offers a unique portrayal of contem-
porary American innovation by showcasing
leaders of government, business, science,
technology and culture. Schatz, whose proj-
ect for
Esquire
magazine, “Portrait of the 21st
Century,” won him national critical acclaim,

includes a diverse group of 89 subjects in “The
Network.” Among them are “father of the
Internet” Vint Cerf, former Supreme Court
Justice Sandra Day O’Connor, Republican
strategist Karl Rove and National Cancer
Institute director Harold Varmus.
Schatz filmed each portrait using multiple
cameras throughout intimate, 45-minute
conversations during which the subjects
discussed their legacies, accomplishments
and goals. Schatz then used custom software
to constantly recombine the video footage,
allowing for “the generative portrait” process.
The final product? Continuously evolving
representation of the sitters—faces that pro-
vide a snapshot of our nation at this precise
moment in time.
